What I Love About December & The Holidays

I think it’s fairly safe to say that the holiday season is everyone’s favorite time of the year. My favorite part is all of the preparation that goes into celebrating this holiday season. I thought I would take a few minutes to reflect on what I love the most about December and include my favorite holiday and Christmas things. Normally I start a little earlier [aka the week of Thanksgiving], but I had my last round of finals for my Paralegal program last week. Now that those are finished and I’ve graduated a second college program, I can finally dive into my usual holiday prep.

It’s finally cold!

Winter Clothes Favorites - The KR.The KR Winter Clothes & Glasses

I can break out all of my cardigans, scarves, boots, and jackets. I swear it goes from summer to winter overnight… and sometimes back to summer. A few years ago it was 75 degrees Fahrenheit on Christmas Day. *eyes roll* As I’m typing this, the sky is grey; and it’s mid thirties and raining. One of my favorite things about this time of year is all of the layers.

My favorite outfits this time of year generally include my favorite leggings/jeggings (yes I finally own a pair of those…), a v neck or tank top, a cardigan or jacket, some boots, and a scarf. I hate walking into a building and feeling like I’m going to combust into flames and not have the ability to take a couple layers off. I also enjoy wearing my glasses out in public, and putting on minimal makeup (this was the last couple weeks of school). I’ve never been one to dress up for school on a regular basis… I mean I don’t know about you, but I like to be comfy in my desk while I frantically scribble notes.

Changing my bedding and décor!

I’m not talking about my regular washing and changing of my sheets. I mean breaking out the flannel ones and snuggling up extra tight at night. I just bought these this year, actually and I cannot tell you how soft and warm they are. These came from Walmart and were like $20.00 for a full sized bed. I do only have a twin at my parents’ house, but I have double stacked mattresses and twin sheets don’t cover it [long story short, I have a trundle bed and needed the underneath space for storage, so I stacked up the mattresses].

Of course we decorate the tree inside, string the lights on the mantle, set up the nativity scenes, and put up the outsight lights on the house, but arguably my favorite part is the smell of Christmas and December (well other than constantly fighting the cats from climbing the tree!).

Christmas Lights & Pinecone Upclose

I love this one so much. Courtesy of my boyfriend’s dad- Thank you Mr. Kevin!

I get so excited to break out my holiday scents.

Usually I’m a candle queen. I have all types of Christmas scented candles – you know, the cinnamon spice, apple pie, candied caramel pecan… Except, I also made another Walmart purchase this year that is a game changer, if you ask me. I got this bad boy:
New Wax Melter - Candle Alternative

I can’t get enough of this wax melter. Walmart has a bunch of styles and they’re only $15.00. Plus, the wax melts are only $2.00 each and come with six cubes in a package. I melt about three at a time and the instructions literally tell you that if you want to switch scents, just pour the hot wax back into the cube packages and let it cool. Of course, wipe out the lid of the melter where the wax sits before adding a new scent.

I picked up five different scents because I have no self control when it comes to things like this. The ones I picked out are: pure white woods, vanilla caramel spice, candied caramel pecan, cinnamon and spice, and cashmere cream! I’ve been burning the cinnamon and spice one this past week and I just want to throw Christmas onto everyone I see. It’s soooo cozy and yummy.

Wax Melt Holiday Scents - the KR
Budget friendly tip here – A wax melter for $15.00 and then the wax cubes are only $2.00 = way cheaper than your favorite Yankee Candles or knock off candles that don’t last as long! I spend way too much money annually on candles, and this new little lamp/melt is bound to save me a good bit of money in the coming New Year!

Holiday Dates!

Tcup of hot cocoa - the krhis doesn’t have to be specifically with your significant other, but I love holiday themed dates (best friend dates totally count, too). My boyfriend took my to Panera Bread (my favorite!), and to see a huge Christmas lights display at our local Nascar track. It was a huge four mile lap of lights to look at, and it was beautiful. Of course there was hot cocoa involved! We’re also going to build a gingerbread house together tonight, and we have a few of our favorite Christmas movies to watch before the 25th!
It’s so fun to get festive. I love taking shopping trips to get gifts for all of my loved ones. Then there’s all the present wrapping, baking, and just spending quality time with the people who matter most. Three years ago this Christmas Day, I lost my grandfather. It was a very hard day. The past two Christmases weren’t the same and were just so sad and were very difficult for me to enjoy. This year I am so looking forward to my favorite day of the year. It is still going to feel different, but I don’t feel the stress and the pain this year. Plus, my family has a different Christmas Angel now. He’s a grumpy, old, santa-lookalike, and one of the most influential people in my life. He probably doesn’t even know it either.

There’s something magical about December…

It brings out the best in people, and changes your mood entirely. I’m hopeful that we get a snow this year on Christmas. Only once in my 24 years of living in the Southeastern United States have I ever seen a white Christmas — and it started snowing around 8:00 p.m. on Christmas Day, so I guess technically that doesn’t count.

On that note, I’m in the mood to go make cookies…. catch you lovelies later! xo.

Great article! I am so excited for the holidays this year because it is the first year that we have a regular size Christmas tree and outdoor christmas decorations! My other favorite thing about this time of year is pumpkin spice everything 🙂

Ah that’s so fun!! I love all the decorations. Our tree is full of all of the handmade ornaments I made when I was in elementary school and such. I love it. And I might be the only person who doesn’t like pumpkin spice but I’m all about the cinnamon and stuff! It’s so happy and cozy!
