I’m not kidding about this one! Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls styling lotion leaves no crunch and an awesome scent on your pretty locks.
One of my best friends was in the process of moving to Texas the other week and I noticed this in her bathroom while she was packing. Since I always struggle to tame my fluffy wavy/curly hair, the bottle peaked my interest. She wasn’t a fan, so she passed it on to me. I wanted to test this out several times before writing about it and here’s what happened:
What it is: This hair lotion is formulated to give the optimal moisture and curl needed for healthy, soft ringlets, without the crunch. This is the softest hold styling lotion Miss Jessie’s brand sells. The site claims:
It’s the first “fabric softener” type styling lotion that will leave your curls clothesline fresh and fluffy soft. You will see that PILLOW SOFT CURLS™ is so easy to apply. It spreads so smoothly and feels as light as a feather on your curls. – Miss Jessie’s
They’re not wrong about the clothesline fresh scent. This is a bit pricey in my opinion, as it costs about $20 for a bottle, and can be purchased from Miss Jessie’s site, Ulta, Walmart, Target, etc. However, I will admit this is a decently large tube of product, so in the end, it may be worth the money.
I read the instructions on the bottle and did some quick searching on the internet and decided to give it a chance.
I started by using my usual routine of washing and in-shower conditioning my hair. I gently brushed it out using my Wet Brush, and then pulled it up in a Turbie. I put a dime-sized drop of the Pillow Soft Curls lotion in my palm and worked it through my hair from the tips while scrunching it. I used my hair dryer and diffuser on low to try my hair and it turned into a giant fluff ball. I ended up rocking a low messy bun.
The next time I used it and applied a little bit more of the styling lotion and just scrunched my hair and let it air dry – no dryer and no brushing. I made the mistake of touching my hair A LOT while it dried so it dried straight but still fluffy… urgh.
I found this works best on my hair when I don’t brush it, touch it, or dry it. Air drying my hair with this product in it, leaves my hair smelling clean and soft. My curls aren’t crunchy and don’t look wet all day, as they can with regular hair gel.
Final Thoughts: Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls conditions my blonde locks while it tames the frizz and shapes the curls (as opposed to just letting it dry naturally – my waves/curls have no shape). I feel like my normal mousse and gel have a tendency to dry my hair out more and leave a crunchy texture unless I mess with my hair. I’m not elated over this, but I’m also not disappointed. It’s nice but doesn’t wow me. I wish this styling lotion would boost my curls/waves more while hydrating the strands. Maybe after more uses, I will be a little more fond of this.
