Since I’m usually on the go and spend many nights and weekends either at my boyfriend’s apartment or out of town at my best friend’s house, I’m always on the lookout for travel friendly makeup. It generally needs to be durable and compact to keep my makeup bag a reasonable size. The keyword is reasonable. I always am prepared to do a full face, and aim to carry products that can be quick and easy for errands or done up more for a night out.
About a month ago, I picked up the Tarte Double Duty Beauty Palette in Classic Courage for $28.00 at Ulta. It is a limited edition palette, but is still available on Tarte’s Website here and maybe at some Ulta stores (it was sold out in my area after I bought the last one). The palette comes in Sultry Star Power, as well, but it is currently sold out on Tarte’s website (it may be in some Ulta stores or other retailers that carry Tarte).
As you can see Courage is a warmer toned palette, while Star Power is a little cooler. I chose the Courage palette because the colors swatched beautifully with my skin tone and seemed to be the shades I would reach for more often. I wanted to make sure I was choosing a palette that I would always want in my makeup bag and I most definitely do! [I have their Amazonian Clay Blush in Glisten, a shimmery peachy pink and I use it all the time, so I figured this palette wouldn’t disappoint.]
So the palette details:
This tiny palette (in comparison to other palettes) comes with 5 eye shadow shades and one blush shade. Each shadow is .035 ounces and the blush is .19 ounces. The Tartelette in Bloom and similar palettes have shadows that are .053 ounces per shade and their full sized blushes are .20 ounces for size reference. So while the shadows are smaller than some in other palettes, they are plenty big to dip your brush into, and the blush is .01 ounces smaller than the full size, which really isn’t noticeable.
This palette sells for $28.00 for five shadows and one blush, which is the price for the full-sized blush alone. As mentioned above the blush included in the palette is .01 away from being full sized. Essentially you’re getting a bonus of five shadows for the price of one blush.
This palette comes in a compact square shape. The outside is a shiny gold with magnetic closure. On the front is printed “she dreamed, she believed, & she succeeded” in a flat purple. It’s sturdy and has a mirror above the shadows on the inside.
“Take your full face of fabulous from day to night with this full face eye & cheek palette. The pigment-packed formulas are powered by Amazonian clay to help balance skin so your makeup stays put, and each travel friendly palette includes a special message to inspire you to take on the day or night with confidence.” – Tarte Cosmestics
My first impression of this palette was that it smelled great and was beautifully packaged. Tarte is one of my favorite brands for their packaging and the scent of their products. It’s always so sweet.
I swatched the shadows on my forearm and was blown away. They were super smooth and had an awesome color payoff. The shades are a great range for being a small palette. The two matte shades are Rise & Shine and Trailblazer. The first is a highlight shade and the latter is a great crease shade. The metallic shades from lightest to darkest are rosy outlook a light pinky color, lucky penny a pinky-copper color, and smile on which is a warm brown. The blush color is courage, a matte pink complimentary to rosy outlook, with a slightly more purple undertone. The blush can also be used as a shadow color if you choose (makeup has no rules).
I will say that the palette kicks up a moderate amount of product when dipping your brush in, but I think that is common with Tarte’s powder products and it honestly doesn’t bother me. My guess is because the shadows and blush are so soft- you don’t have to dig for your color to show up. I have a light-medium skin tone (I use L’Oreal True Match Lumi Foundation in either W3 or C3 (C3 is less orange hued, which I’m liking more and more; or Bare Minerals Pure Brightening Serum Foundation in 07 Bare Natural… in case you want a reference).
Applying and using these colors is a breeze. It’s great for any makeup experience level. They are silky, highly pigmented, and blend out beautifully. I’ve travelled with my Courage Palette and it’s been perfect – no damage and no mess. The Courage Palette fits in my makeup bag and I usually do a simple light smokey eye with this palette for work, but I am looking forward to amping it up for more night events soon! The price point is excellent. Yes, Tarte is a high end brand, but the quality of their shadows matches the price perfectly. It is less expensive than other high end brands and palettes currently on the market.
Tarte got it right with this one, and if you have the chance definitely pick one up. If you are looking for a travel friendly palette that keeps things simple, or are looking for a multiple palette that is worth your money, I highly recommend this!
